Digging a bit deeper, I learned something of author, Harold Allison. From Washington, Indiana, he only passed away this last January. He was 83.
He was by all accounts, a prolific writer. In addition to The Tragic Saga of the Indiana Indians, he published over 4800 pieces, according to Lindsay Owens of the Washington Times-Herald.
What is really fascinating is that he was, beyond his high school career as a Washington Hatchet, self-taught. And not only as a writer columnist, but as a recognized historian, naturalist, geologist. He was once described in an Indianapolis Star article as “Indiana’s Wilderness Detective.” This and other fascinating records can be found in the archives of the Daviess County Historical Society & Museum website, well-worth a visit.
Here’s Lindsay’s article celebrating Mr. Allison’s life. And for further reading, you can see more of her work and subscribe to the Washington Times-Herald here.
The Tragic Saga of the Indiana Indians is available in several places, including Amazon and thriftbooks.
